SAMPLE ASSIGNMENT #3

PROMPT: Write a letter to a character in the book giving them advice.

Dear Cathy,

I know that you are currently dating Bryon. He seems like a nice guy, even though he has a bad reputation. His brother Mark tends to give him a bad rap because Mark is still on probation and even got caught stealing the principal's car last week! What do you think about that?

Does Bryon talk to you about his feelings? It seems that he is distancing himself more from Mark and hanging out with you a lot. Some people may wonder what a good girl like you is doing with Bryon, but I think you should trust your instincts. Deep down inside Bryon is a good guy and he is turning around.

Select ONE of the following topics to write about in our AMS Blog. Draft your response below.

* Explain why you think Bryon took the blame for cutting off Angela’s hair. Then discuss a time when you took the blame for something you did not do.

* Bryon says, “A reputation is a hell of a thing to have; you got to kill yourself to keep it.” What do you think Bryon means by this. Explain what his reputation is. Then discuss how you think other people see you in school or in your neighborhood. Is it different from how you see yourself?

Choose ONE topic you would like to write about and begin drafting your response.

1. If you had to be stranded on a deserted island with any of the characters in the book, who would it be? Why? Who would be your last pick? Why?

2. The main character wants to be your PenPal to talk about everything he has been going through and get advice from you. Write them a letter discussing the conflicts he is going through, then write about how you would deal with the situation if it were you. Make the main character feel good by telling them about their strengths and what they could work on.

3. Pretend you are the author of the book and you are on Oprah! She asks you, “Do you think people are basically good-hearted or basically selfish?” Based on the characters in this novel, what would you answer?

4. This book takes place in the 1970s. What have you learned about the time period? Do you think the world is better or worse off now?

Assignment #2: Discuss a theme in your book

THEME: a central idea or message the author presents in a book

ASSIGNMENT: Write a paragraph in which you discuss a theme in the story.

(1) Choose a theme (an idea) you think the author talks a lot about in the book.

(2) Explain why you chose the theme by providing a summary of what is happening in the book relating to your theme.

(3) Discuss what the author seems to be saying about your chosen theme.
