AMS Literature: Erick

My name is Erick and I'm a student at AMS. I love to read books that are interesting and love to write a lot about my past. My favorite place to read is when I'm at home, on my bed or when we're driving somewhere in a car. I like to be in my room because it's quiet and no one is there to bother me and in the car I can concentrate with the music. It gets me more into the book and it sounds like the music goes with the story I am reading.

My favorite books are mystery books and books that have to do with people's lives.When I read books about people's lives, it reminds me of the newspaper because there's always something going on with someone's life or street.

* Explain why you think Bryon took the blame for cutting off Angela’s hair. Then discuss a time when you took the blame for something you did not do.

* Bryon says, “A reputation is a hell of a thing to have; you got to kill yourself to keep it.” What do you think Bryon means by this. Explain what his reputation is. Then discuss how you think other people see you in school or in your neighborhood. Is it different from how you see yourself?

1. If you had to be stranded on a deserted island with any of the characters in the book, who would it be? Why? Who would be your last pick? Why?

2. The main character wants to be your PenPal to talk about everything he has been going through and get advice from you. Write them a letter discussing the conflicts he is going through, then write about how you would deal with the situation if it were you. Make the main character feel good by telling them about their strengths and what they could work on.

3. Pretend you are the author of the book and you are on Oprah! She asks you, “Do you think people are basically good-hearted or basically selfish?” Based on the characters in this novel, what would you answer?

4. This book takes place in the 1970s. What have you learned about the time period? Do you think the world is better or worse off now?
