AMS Literature: Ms.Caceres

Hello,

My name is Ms.Caceres and I am an 8th grade teacher at AMS. I love to read, but mostly I enjoy writing poetry and prose. My favorite place to read is at a quiet cafe by my house called "Beans and Grapes". I like the cafe because it is always full of people who are quietly enjoying books or working on a computer. I prefer it to the library because we can eat and drink as we read.

My favorite all time book is "Flowers for Algernon" about a mentally retarded 32-year old man who undergoes a brain surgery and becomes a genius. He befriends a mouse named Algernon. The story is a very emotionally captivating, and the ending is a great surprise you would have never expected!

Currently, I am reading "The Country Under My Skin". This book is a memoir about a woman who fought in the guerrilla in Central America. She was once considered a revolutionary and met some famous people like Fidel Castro and Che Guevara.

* Explain why you think Bryon took the blame for cutting off Angela’s hair. Then discuss a time when you took the blame for something you did not do.

* Bryon says, “A reputation is a hell of a thing to have; you got to kill yourself to keep it.” What do you think Bryon means by this. Explain what his reputation is. Then discuss how you think other people see you in school or in your neighborhood. Is it different from how you see yourself?

Write them a letter discussing the conflicts he is going through, then write about how you would deal with the situation if it were you. Make the main character feel good by telling them about their strengths and what they could work on.

3. Pretend you are the author of the book and you are on Oprah! She asks you, “Do you think people are basically good-hearted or basically selfish?” Based on the characters in this novel, what would you answer?

4. This book takes place in the 1970s. What have you learned about the time period? Do you think the world is better or worse off now?
