THEME: Police and Authority

I think the author (S.E. Hinton) writes a lot about the theme of police and authority. I chose this theme because in the book “That Was Then, This is Now”, Bryon and Mark are not perfect kids and they get into trouble a lot. On page 29, Bryon says that he has never been able to accept authority and being told what to do. He says this because he had been arrested by two cops who beat him up and left him far away from home. The author may be trying to say that sometimes cops abuse their power and this affects the way young people behave.

I feel that the police try to take over people lives and have control over them!

* Explain why you think Bryon took the blame for cutting off Angela’s hair. Then discuss a time when you took the blame for something you did not do.

* Bryon says, “A reputation is a hell of a thing to have; you got to kill yourself to keep it.” What do you think Bryon means by this. Explain what his reputation is. Then discuss how you think other people see you in school or in your neighborhood. Is it different from how you see yourself?

Make the main character feel good by telling them about their strengths and what they could work on.

3. Pretend you are the author of the book and you are on Oprah! She asks you, “Do you think people are basically good-hearted or basically selfish?” Based on the characters in this novel, what would you answer?

4. This book takes place in the 1970s. What have you learned about the time period? Do you think the world is better or worse off now?
