Reputations

When Bryon says "a reputation is hell of a thing to have;you got to kill yourself to keep it", he means that a reputation is hard to keep. People at school must see me as a weak person because I'm in a wheel chair, But I'm not because I'm one of the best in math and I'm very strong. This is how I see myself.

Michael, I agree that reputations are expectations placed on us. Sometimes reputations are unfair. I'm glad that you are willing to dispute the reputation that others want to give you.

* Explain why you think Bryon took the blame for cutting off Angela’s hair. Then discuss a time when you took the blame for something you did not do.

* Bryon says, “A reputation is a hell of a thing to have; you got to kill yourself to keep it.” What do you think Bryon means by this. Explain what his reputation is. Then discuss how you think other people see you in school or in your neighborhood. Is it different from how you see yourself?

3. Pretend you are the author of the book and you are on Oprah! She asks you, “Do you think people are basically good-hearted or basically selfish?” Based on the characters in this novel, what would you answer?

4. This book takes place in the 1970s. What have you learned about the time period? Do you think the world is better or worse off now?

ASSIGNMENT: Write a paragraph in which you discuss a theme in the story.

(1) Choose a theme (an idea) you think the author talks a lot about in the book.

(2) Explain why you chose the theme by providing a summary of what is happening in the book relating to your theme.

(3) Discuss what the author seems to be saying about your chosen theme.
